Quite a few people have asked me in-person for initial impressions of Vietnam and have enjoyed my stories. So I thought I would share a few posts with some impressions, some purely for interest and some might turn out to have business relevance. You decide which! The very first and unavoidable impression of Hanoi is the mopeds and the tooting of horns. The city has grown very rapidly in the last few decades, so the roads - especially in the centre of town - are crowded with what feel like swarms of mopeds. Horn-tooting seems initially to indicate chaos, but pretty soon you realise that it is just a different road etiquette - horn tooting isn't aggressive (like in the UK), it is just letting other road users know you are there. It didn't take me long to grow affectionate for a different way of doing traffic. Though I don't know why horn tooting is required when you are the only moped on the street at 2 am...Why is the city growing so fast? Well, business is booming - lots of manufacturing growth over the last few decades and lots of overseas trade. Of which Blacksheep is a small part!

Here's another snippet from our recent work on creative clusters, inspired by my time in Hong Kong. It's no surprise that Hong Kong boasts a thriving culture and creative industry, from repurposed old warehouses for artists to the West Kowloon Cultural District. I had the privilege of working on this impressive project, exploring how cultural industries could be a viable business strategy. Key insights from this experience include:_The value of curating a cross-subsidizing mix of uses._The opportunity to leverage the full spectrum of cultural and creative industries, including high-value, rapidly growing sectors like design, publishing, and digital._The importance of an evidence-based approach, incorporating market testing with a wide range of stakeholders.Want to know more? As a first-generation Southeast Asian, I am proud to support a diverse set of Asian American organizations that inspire me through their important work to mobilize families and communities, which is fundamental to realizing a more inclusive economy for all. What do the data show? The myth of “Model Minority” emphasis among AAPI communities has unintended harmful consequences. Despite performing above average on income, high school graduation rate, educational attainment, AAPI community are one of the largest economically divided racial and ethnic group in the US. With the top 10th income distribution making 10.7 times more than the bottom 10th. Pervasive stereotypes of uniform “success and wealth” often results in fewer funding and resources opportunities even more so in communities where AAPI population is lower compared to other minority race/ethnicity. #AAPIHM https://acdcnv.orghttps://lnkd.in/gmv9G2VUhttps://aapifund.orghttps://lnkd.in/gscmHgZj

Following European traditions, last year I sent my son Benjamin to summer camp in Switzerland, yes he had the time of his life, but nothing like this last two weeks here in Shanghai! Kids learn about #DesignEngineering #GlobalSupplyChain and #IndustrialSovereignty Kids had to source products to fix a computer and were explained about the importance of keeping industrial production within Chinese borders. His question was obvious, are we doing the same thing back at home? How do you explain an 8 years old that in Europe we are becoming increasingly dependent on other countries, not only to produce goods, but to source the food we eat? #EuropeanSovereignty #GlobalKids #WorldIsChangingFast #NextGenerationKids

Shanghai says no, Guangzhou says yes....In a previous post today - "Bold, nasty and sarcastic" - I shared an article "我一直以为上海浦东是市场经济呢" which both mocked and criticized the Shanghai Road Transport Administration's decision yesterday to ban ride-hailing apps from picking up passengers at Pudong Airport.I wrote "The move was made "to ensure the smooth and orderly movement of traffic, especially during the Spring Festival." Today the Guangzhou City Government announced specific transportation measures for the Spring Festival period including encouraging the use of ride-hailing apps for pickups at all major mass transportation hubs including bus, rail and 白云 Airport. The online reaction to the differing attitudes and decisions by the two cities on this particular topic is rampant and telling. One common refrain is "that is why the business environment is so much more vibrant in Guangzhou and Shenzhen."However, these two comments by netizens, probably sums up best the "superiority" of the Guangzhou governance model -"自辛亥革命以来,广州在社会进步方面一直领先全国。""广州人性化全国没得比,广州五湖四海一家亲不排外。我热爱广州。"#shanghai #guangzhou #springfestival #transportation #ridehailing #app #pickuphttps://lnkd.in/gr7w6mck

This week is a short week with the national holidays today and tomorrow in China, for Mid-Autumn festival.I'm reflecting on my deadline for settling in our newest teachers and I'm feeling like I'm setting a deadline that actually is not realistic for some.We all grow at different rates 🌱🪴🌴I know myself, that as a second year educator in China, but a 17 year veteran of international education, that you are always learning about the culture you are joining and as people from new cultures join you the complexity of becoming multicultural increases.Teachers who joined us last year (along with me) are happy in Chengdu and incredibly supportive of how we are evolving as a young kindergarten. Those who have joined this year are also enjoying the experiences and learning very quickly. However, I can't help but wonder what it's like when they go home and close their front door. Some are single and not sharing this experience with anyone. This is easy for some, but challenging for others. This week I began to think about the importance of not waiting for people to ask questions, or the opportunities to survey staff and instead think that being available- not just saying my door is open, or wandering around school and showing 'availability' but instead actually saying to each person:"Hey, how's it going outside of school? I see you are smashing it here in your classroom, but how are you doing at weekends and after school?"This ⬆️ is my goal for next week and I will calendar this for earlier in our first half term next year.I know that I had many questions at this stage in my first year, eventhough I was bold enough to ask. For those who are not bold, I want to ensure retention of staff and not recruitment when we get to 'express our intentions' later in the survey in November.#LuxelakesCIK #staffretention #internationalteachers #socialifematterstoo

If you are living in Hong Kong, may I ask you:1. How many non-local friends do you have in Hong Kong? 2. How well do you know them?3. Do you understand the difficulties they face living in Hong Kong?In Hong Kong, 8.4% of the population are non-Chinese. However, the social circles of local people and ethnic minorities remain quite separate.Due to language barriers and lack of understanding, many of them face difficulties in education, employment and social integration.Yet, everyone, including you and me, can do something to change that.Try to understand their culture. Pay them your respect. Help them with translation. Give them a smile. Let them feel they are welcomed. When each one of us does our little part, the change can be enormous.#SpreadPositiveVibes#PayItForward#DiversityAndInclusion#CulturalMonopolySimulation#HongKongRedCross

100 km Golden Inner Bay, Guangdong's future economic growth areaRecently, the Department of Natural Resources of Guangdong Province released the "Golden Inner Bay" concept plan, including Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Foshan, Dongguan, Zhongshan, and Zhuhai, forming an A-shaped 100-kilometer coastline and about 2,100 square kilometers of water area, driving the coordinated development and rapid development of the three major metropolitan areas of Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and the west bank of the Pearl River Estuary.Within this range, there are 4 trillion GDP cities and multiple national and provincial new areas. There are also modern industries such as aerospace rocket industry, automobile industry, shipbuilding, high-end equipment manufacturing, artificial intelligence and digital economy, new generation information technology industry, and unmanned driving, and their competitiveness and vitality are among the best in the country. In order to better gather strength to build a world-class urban agglomeration, planning the "Golden Inner Bay" is an important layout. Relying on the Nansha Bridge, Humen Bridge, and Shenzhen-Zhongshan Bridge to connect and open up convenient exchanges between the two sides, the next step will be to integrate resources and set higher target values to lead the future. Especially Guangzhou and Shenzhen, as the leading cities of the "Golden Inner Bay", the former continues to provide talents and national scientific research resources, and the latter promotes a new round of innovation and upgrading, and radiates other cities to stand on the same track.Foshan and Dongguan, relying on their strong manufacturing level, will actively promote enterprise technology iteration and build an international manufacturing capital in the next step. Zhongshan and Zhuhai have the ability to build high-end equipment manufacturing cities and actively link up with other cities.Golden Inner Bay, this belongs to the future, let us witness it together, I'm waiting for you in Guangzhou#china #Sustainable #Innovation———————————————————————————I am: hanson leeShare Chinese business philosophy and unique anecdotes with everyone.
